Parakeets were 'in' during the winter of 1952, and my little
brother David had his heart set on one. On December 24, Mamma,
Daddy, and I went to a parakeet breeder, paid $7.95, and brought
home the pretty green bird we had reserved. The parakeet was
hidden in the back bedroom overnight, but, in the early morning

At six that morning, Daddy and Der Doc the cat ...

When bringing home a new cat or kitten to a different

does not have to be an overwhelming experience for the new cat
or kitten and family. Cats and kittens adjust quickly to
different environments than we do. Depending on the nature,
breed and the environment of a new cat or kitten is how they
will adjust. Kittens will adjust quicker and smoother than an

Semi-moist foods are usually less expensive because they contain
some vegetable protein and are usually supplemented with

for the pet, and for the person receiving the pet. Adopting an

would not just hand someone a baby for Christmas!
Christmas is a time when families get together. There is a lot
of joyful chaos and people rushing here and there with many

'A coward dies a thousand deaths; a brave man dies but once.'
Our cat Der Doc proved that this applies to cats as well.
Caution was the watchword in Der Doc's life. He was a grey cat,
striped like a tiger but decidedly without the tiger's courage.
Daddy said, 'He's the original scaredy-cat.'
Der Doc had the run of our farm in the Bitterroot Valley of
Montana, and the farm had multitudes of opportunities for a
diligent cat. The chief opportunities lay with barn mice during
the winter and field ...
